A Glimpse of Ancient Indian Astronomy. #part-02

Image
Do you know which star is the closest to the earth, When I was student my teacher asked the question to me and at that time my answer was sun, and the answer my teacher expected form me was "Proxima Centauri" but i surprised  him by saying it is the sun. But yes it is granted. But the next closest star to the earth was "Proxima Centauri" . It is approximately about 4.2 light years from the earth. Do you know what about ancient called the 'Proxima Centauri' is "Mitr" (Meaning- the friend) , is that's a coincidence? that they named the closest star as 'Mitr'. It also  shows that they know the difference between planets and stars. Here is the Modern value of speed of light 186,282.397 miles/sec. Now just look after to this 'Shloka'. One 'Nimisha' is the amount of time need to blink your eyes and 1 'Yojana' is around 8-9 miles. this particular 'Shloka' that you see here is actually the formula to calcul...

Why do we visit Temples?

Image
Think India and thought that comes to mind are pictures of majestic temples of the land. These temples were not just immensely beautiful architectural wonders.   They were also places of immense spiritual strength. Scientific analysis has today proven that these temples  were built over areas of maximum positive energy. (Emanates Positive Energy). The 'Moolasthana' or 'Garbhagriha' was built at the spot where energy was maximum. The idol was placed and the 'Garbhagriha' built around it. This point indicated the place of maximum positive energy. Placed below the idols were copper plates with vedic inscription capable of absorbing and radiating energy. When a person visited a temple and walked around the 'parikarama' they came within the radius of this magnetic field thereby imbibing a lot of positive energy. The result was that the visit to the temple rejuvenated his body, mind and soul. (Rejuvenates entire human being). Many time thoughts comes to me ...

A Glimpse of Ancient Indian Astronomy #Part-01

Image
when astronomy seems to be the science going outside,  Meditation is the science going inside, there is quite an adventure waiting for us inside as well. I used to often wondered what the ancient people could have thought when they saw so many stars in the sky, when they saw the planet and moon. They must have made some amazing stories and their imagination could have taken them on many flights of fancy.  I was amazed that how mistaken i was about what i thought ancient Indian to know about astronomy.  I will be discussing a few things about ancient Indian what they knew about astronomy that will take peak of your interest to know more.   1. For a very long time everybody assumes that the earth is flat. The concept that our planet is round is first mentioned around 5th Century BC by the Greek astronomers and scientists, If you check out the Sanskrit word for the earth it is Bhugol (Bhu-means bhumi the earth) (Gol-means round) . Sanskrit is a language which people ...

Significance of Namaste

Image
Namaste: The traditional Indian Greetings : Joining both palms together to greet. A Gesture which marks respect reverence and love for the person we greet. Have you ever wondered, why do we greet people in this way? In yoga this gesture is called Anjali Mudra. It is a well known fact that the tips of the fingers are major energy points. When we bring together the palms of our finger linking tips of our finger, then the nerve circuits of the brain are linked to those of the upper body. A feeling of calmness and well being immediately descends. Also in yoga each finger is representative of a certain energy. The little finger represents Tamas or dullness. The ring finger represents Rajas or activity. The middle finger represents Satwa or refinement. The index finger is the individual soul or jeevatma and the Thumb is the paramaathma or the ultimate soul.  Namaste; Also mean, I honor the place in you in which the entire universe resides.I honor the place in you which is of light,...

Have an Attitude of Gratitude

Nearby, a building construction work was going on. Lots of poor laborers were working there and their small children  used to hold on to one another's shirt and play " train-train ". Someone would become the engine and others would become bogies " Compartments ". Every day these children used to take turns becoming the engine and bogies. But, there was one small boy wearing only a half pant who used to hold one small green cloth in his hand and become the guard daily. So, once I went to him and asked him.."Son, don't u also wish to become an engine or a bogie some time?" He softly replied, "Sir, I don't have a shirt to wear so how will the other children catch me to make the train? I could see the slight wetness in his eyes. But, it gave me a lesson...He could have cried and sat at home and abused his parents for not affording to buy him a shirt.  But instead, he choose another way to play and enjoy himself. In life, we don't get all t...

The Story of the Bhagwad Gita

Image
The story of the Gita is the story of Indian civilization itself.  We know the Gita as Krishna's counsel to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurushetra . But was it Krishna who created it? or  was it poet Ved Vyasa who was speaking the truth of the universe through Krishna? Does Sanjaya , who told blind king Dhritarashtra all that he saw happening in a far away battlefield, deserve any less credit? What about all the poets and philosophers who sang, recited, wrote down, or translated the Gita for people like us? This is their story- the story of the Gita r ight before the final confrontation between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, Krishna, who is the universe personified, rescues Arjuna from paralyzing doubt by giving him the essence  of Vedic thought- The Bhagwad Gita. Vyasa told the story of the Mahabharata to his disciple Vaisampayana, who told it to Romaharshana, who told it to Sauti, who told it to Shaunaka in the Naimisha forest.  Four thousand ...

The World is Mine...

Image
It has been circulated and gone round the globe many times and it's good to reflect on how fortunate and blessed we are.... Today, upon a bus, I saw a very beautiful woman and wished I were as beautiful. When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle. She had one leg and used a crutch. But as she passed, she passed a smile.     Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two legs; the world is mine . I stopped to buy some candy. The lad who sold it had such charm. I talked with him, he seemed so glad. If I were late, It would do no harm. And as I left, he said to me, " I thank you, you've been so kind. It's nice to talk with folks like you. You see,"he said, "I'm blind." Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two eyes; the world is mine. Later while walking down the street, I saw a child I knew. He stood and watched the others play, but he did not know what to do. I stopped a moment and then I said, Why don...

King with four wives

Image
Once upon a time there was a king with four wives, One day the king got sick and was on his death bed, afraid of being in the after life alone. He asked his fourth wife, whom he loved the most and bought her diamonds, gold and elegant clothing. He asked her would you die with me and go with me to the after life?  The fourth wife replied ; I'm sorry, i can't do that and walked away.  He also loved his third wife and he was very proud and would always show her off to neighboring kingdoms. So he called on this third wife and asked would you accompany me to the after life? The third wife replied ; I love my life too much. I'm sorry i cannot go with you and when you die I'm going to remarry.  His second wife has always been there for him in his times of need so he asked, would you accompany me to the after life? The second wife then replied ; I'm sorry that i can't help you out this time but what i can do is arrange you funeral and i will be there ...

Teacher "Guru"

Image
Guru Brahma Gurur Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheswaraha, Guru Saakshat Param Brahma, Tasmai Sree Gurave Namaha... Guru is verily the representative of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He creates, sustains knowledge and destroys the weeds of ignorance. I salute such a Guru . Dedicated to all those teachers who are the concrete pillars of the Nations. From A school principal's speech at a graduation... She said "The Doctor wants his child to become a doctor". "The Engineer wants his child to become an engineer". "The Businessman wants his ward to become CEO". But a teacher also wants his child to become one of them  as well. Nobody wants to become a teacher by choice. Very sad but that's the truth. The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One Man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become only a ...

Role of "Karma" In the Path to Prosperity

Image
Karma: (in Hinduism and Buddhism) the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences. When Lord Krishna returned home after the battle of Mahabharata, his wife Rukumani confronted him. "How could you be part to the killing of Guru Drona and Bheeshma , who were such righteous people and had a lifetime of righteousness behind them." Initially Lord Krishna avoided her questions but when she did not relent, he replied "No doubt they had a lifetime of righteousness behind them but they both had committed one single sin that destroyed all their lifetime of righteousness". Rukumani asked "And what was the sin?" Lord Krishna replied "They were both present in the court when a lady (Draupadi) was being disrobed and being elders they had the authority to stop it but they did not. This single crime is enough to destroy all righteousness of this world. Rukumani ...

Five Fools of Corporate...

Image
Once The King Akbar asked Birbal to look for five biggest idiots in his state and produce them is his court within a month. After a month's extensive search operations, Birbal brought to the court only two people! "But I asked for five", Akbar angrily asked. "Give me a chance to present them one by one", Birbal pleaded and went on to present his idiots: "Maharaj, this man, while travelling in a bullock cart, was keeping his luggage on his head so as not to hurt the bullocks. He is the first idiot. "(In corporate parlance, the one who take all load on themselves and not delegate)" . Pointing to the second man Birbal continued, "And this man here is the second idiot. Some grass grew on the roof of his thatched house and he was trying to force his cow climb up a ladder to graze on them. "(In corporate parlance, those who benchmark with those whose resources are out of reach and irrelevant for them)". Birbal conti...
