Significance of Namaste

Namaste: The traditional Indian Greetings : Joining both palms together to greet.

A Gesture which marks respect reverence and love for the person we greet. Have you ever wondered, why do we greet people in this way?

In yoga this gesture is called Anjali Mudra. It is a well known fact that the tips of the fingers are major energy points. When we bring together the palms of our finger linking tips of our finger, then the nerve circuits of the brain are linked to those of the upper body.

A feeling of calmness and well being immediately descends. Also in yoga each finger is representative of a certain energy.

The little finger represents Tamas or dullness.
The ring finger represents Rajas or activity.
The middle finger represents Satwa or refinement.
The index finger is the individual soul or jeevatma and the Thumb is the paramaathma or the ultimate soul.

Namaste; Also mean, I honor the place in you in which the entire universe resides.I honor the place in you which is of light, of truth, of love and of peace. When you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, we are one.

These are the reasons behind 'Namaste'- The traditional Indian greeting.
